It Started With a Comment
Shifting Shades Co. was created from personal experience with vitiligo.
Our founder first developed vitiligo at 28, beginning with small patches around the eyes. Over time, those patches grew and new ones appeared across the face, hands, wrists, legs and other areas of the body.
At first, it was difficult not to feel self-conscious. Even today, there is an awareness that comes with having skin that looks different. Some days are easier than others. But over time, vitiligo also became simply another part of who our founder is — something unique that can add character rather than something that always needs to be hidden.
The idea for Shifting Shades Co. came from a simple interaction. Someone commented on the founder's "wild tan lines."
They weren't tan lines. They were vitiligo.
It wasn't meant to be hurtful, but the comment highlighted something important: many people simply don't know what vitiligo is.
That moment sparked the idea that greater awareness and representation were needed.
More Than Vitiligo
Shifting Shades Co. began with vitiligo, but the message is bigger than one skin difference.
Skin comes in countless shades, tones and patterns. Birthmarks, pigmentation differences, scars, vitiligo and other visible differences can make someone stand out before a word is ever spoken.
We believe those differences deserve representation.
Shifting Shades Co. is for anyone who has ever felt looked at differently because of their skin — and for anyone who believes that what makes us different can also be what makes us uniquely ourselves.
We're all different in our own way. That's something worth recognizing, not hiding.
